Dr. Tark Himdi, the Executive Director of MCKE, attended the first meeting of researchers organized by Prince Khaled Al-Faisal’s Chair for the Development of Slum Areas in Mecca on Thursday, May 28th, 2015. Faculty and students attended the meeting held in the Engineering and Islamic Architecture building. During the meeting, Researchers presented dissertation work, research proposals and plans to study slum areas in Mecca. The Chair professor, Dr. Amgad Maghraby, reiterated the University President, Dr. Baker Ma’atooq Asas’s support for the activities of the chair and announced plans to host an international meeting for the development of slum areas. In addition, Dr. Maghraby also discussed plans to launch an engineering contest to develop a slum area in Mecca. At the end of the meeting, Dr. TariK Himdi, Executive Director of AlMuallem Center for Knowledge and Education (the Chair financial supporter), spoke about the Saudi Binladin Group’s pride in funding this chair as a reflection of its support for the country’s leadership vision. He stressed the need for applied research, which can be juxtaposed on the ground through models and practical solutions. Furthermore, he called for research and studies related to slums to extend to economic and social aspects as the issue of slums is a multi-faceted challenge that requires a comprehensive approach.
