Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in partnership with AlMuallem Mohammed BinLadin Center for Knowledge and Education (MCKE), organized an international forum to document the pilgrimage festivals from different countries, during the period from 20 to 22 April 2015.
Dr. Ismail Serageldin; BA Director, and Dr. Zahir Othman; Secretary General of MCKE opened the forum, and welcomed speakers from other Arab countries in the region. Experts in heritage and folklore from Morocco, Sudan, Bahrain, Jordan, India, Somalia, Libya, Lebanon, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen, in addition to Egypt participated in the forum.
The presenters discussed customs and traditions associated with the celebration of the Hajj (reception and farewell of Haj, popular dishes, habits accompanying the life cycle of the Eid al-Adha, home preparations). These customs included popular arts, literature and performances (songs and music, folk tales and proverbs, Sir popular sayings, ceremonies and popular pilgrimage Murals, costumes, decorations, traditional crafts ... etc).
The attendees agreed on the importance of documenting the traditions of the different countries and communities associated with celebrating the Muslim’s pilgrimage to Mecca.
